There is an interesting background to the Cambodia casinos that lie just over the dividing line from neighboring Thailand, where casino wagering is illegal. Eight casinos are situated in a generally small location in the municipality of Poipet in Cambodia. This collection of Cambodia gambling halls is in an excellent destination, a three to four hour drive from Bangkok and Macao, the two most popular wagering locations in Asia. Cambodia casinos do a thriving business with Thai blue-collar workers and visitors from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with just a few Westerners. The astonishing income gained from the casinos ranges from 7.5 million dollars to over twelve and a half million dollars, and there are a few restrictions constraints for gambling den ownership. Ownership is assumed to be mainly Thai; still, financing sources are vague. The borders are formally open from 09:00 to 17:00, and despite the fact visas are allegedly necessary to pass, there are means around this, as is true of many border crossings.
The initial Cambodia casinos premiered in Phnom Penh in the mid nineties, but were forced to close in 1998, leaving just a single gambling den in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a moored barge gambling hall, features 150 slots and 60 gaming tables. The newer Holiday Palace Casino and Resort contains three hundred one armed bandits and 70 table games and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has one hundred and sixty six slots and ninety six gaming tables, including eighty seven baccarat (the most popular game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Also, there is the Casino Tropicana, with one hundred and thirty five slot machines and sixty six of the familiar table games, as well as 1 table of Casino Stud Poker. One more of the 8 casinos in Poipet, again a part of a motel, is the Princess Casino with 166 slot machine games and ninety seven casino games. The Star Vegas Casino is is located in an international vacation and hotel compound that highlights numerous comforts aside from the gambling hall, which contains ten thousand square feet of 130 one armed bandits and 88 gaming tables.
