There is a fascinating history to the Cambodia gambling halls that sit just across the border from next door Thailand, in which casino gambling is illegal. Eight casinos are anchored in a relatively tiny space in the metropolis of Poipet in Cambodia. This group of Cambodia gambling dens is in a perfect location, a 3 to 4 hour drive from Bangkok and Macao, the 2 biggest gambling locations in Asia. Cambodia gambling halls do a thriving business with Thai workers and travelers from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with only very couple of Westerners. The amazing income gained from the gambling halls ranges from 7.5 million dollars to over twelve and a half million dollars, and there are a couple of controls constraints for gambling hall ownership. Ownership is required to be largely Thai; although, funding sources are ambiguous. The borders are officially open from 09:00 to 1700, and even though visas are apparently necessary to cross, there are methods around this, as is accurate of many border crossings.
The first Cambodia gambling halls premiered in Phnom Penh in the mid nineties, but were forced to close in the late nineties, leaving only 1 gambling den in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a moored boat gambling hall, contains one hundred and fifty slot machines and 60 gaming tables. The Naga gambling den never closes with 42 tables of mini-punto banco, four tables of 21, 10 of roulette, 2 of Caribbean Stud Poker, and 1 each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The initial casino in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in the late nineties and the Golden Crown soon opened. There are one hundred and fifty one armed bandits and five tables at the Golden Crown and 104 slot machines and 68 table games at the Holiday Palace. The latest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort contains 300 one armed bandits and 70 tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has one hundred and sixty six slots and 96 gaming tables, including eighty seven baccarat banque (the most popular game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Also, there is the Casino Tropicana, with one hundred and thirty five slots and sixty six of the normal table games, as well as a single table of Casino Stud Poker. One more of the eight gambling dens in Poipet, also a part of a motel, is the Princess Casino with one hundred and sixty six one armed bandits and ninety seven casino games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of an international vacation and hotel complex that contains many amenities on top of the gambling den, which houses ten thousand square feet of one hundred and thirty one armed bandits and 88 table games.
