The entire process of living in Zimbabwe is something of a risk at the moment, so you could imagine that there might be very little desire for going to Zimbabwe’s gambling halls. Actually, it appears to be functioning the other way around, with the awful market circumstances leading to a greater eagerness to wager, to attempt to locate a quick win, a way from the problems.

For the majority of the people surviving on the meager local earnings, there are 2 popular types of gambling, the state lotto and Zimbet. As with most everywhere else in the world, there is a national lotto where the probabilities of profiting are surprisingly small, but then the winnings are also surprisingly big. It’s been said by economists who study the situation that the lion’s share do not buy a card with a real expectation of winning. Zimbet is founded on either the local or the English soccer divisions and involves determining the outcomes of future games.

Zimbabwe’s casinos, on the other hand, cater to the astonishingly rich of the society and tourists. Up until recently, there was a considerably large tourist business, founded on nature trips and visits to Victoria Falls. The economic woes and connected conflict have cut into this trade.

Amongst Zimbabwe’s gambling dens, there are two in the capital, Harare, the Carribea Bay Resort and Casino, which has 5 gaming tables and one armed bandits, and the Plumtree gambling hall, which has only slot machine games. The Zambesi Valley Hotel and Entertainment Center in Kariba also has just slots. Mutare has the Monclair Hotel and Casino and the Leopard Rock Hotel and Casino, the pair of which offer table games, one armed bandits and video poker machines, and Victoria Falls has the Elephant Hills Hotel and Casino and the Makasa Sun Hotel and Casino, each of which have gaming machines and table games.

In addition to Zimbabwe’s casinos and the above mentioned lottery and Zimbet (which is considerably like a parimutuel betting system), there are a total of 2 horse racing complexes in the country: the Matabeleland Turf Club in Bulawayo (the second city) and the Borrowdale Park in Harare.

Given that the market has contracted by more than 40% in the past few years and with the associated poverty and bloodshed that has cropped up, it isn’t known how well the vacationing business which supports Zimbabwe’s casinos will do in the in the years to come. How many of the casinos will be alive until things improve is merely unknown.
